The Hartelsgraben educational trail

HartelsgrabenHartelsgraben is regarded as a jewel of nature because of its magnificent rock and water scenery and forested gorge. For a long time it was used by industry: the historic charcoal cart track that runs from Johnsbach to Hieflau was built 500 years ago. And in 1892 the Styrian Forestry Agency started building a logging road down to the River Enns. As the first mountain forest road of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was very popular with visitors. The drystone walls built by specialists from Friuli Venezia Giulia are particularly impressive and have withstood 120 years of avalanches.
