National Parks in Austria

The National Parks enjoy a particular standing in Austrian environmental protection policy. The parks are important not only for Austria but are also of international interest. To date, six of Austria’s most beautiful and ecologically valuable regions have been officially designated as National Parks.

Austrian National Parks in order of establishment:

  • Hohe Tauern National Park (1981 – Carinthian part)
  • Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park (1993, extending over the border into Hungary)
  • Donau-Auen National Park (1996)
  • Kalkalpen National Park (1997)
  • Thayatal National Park (1999, extending over the border into the Czech Republic Tschechien)
  • Gesäuse National Park (2002)

"Scientific Research in National Parks"

Research in the National Parks provides an important foundation for the management of protected areas. It supports the Austrian National Parks’ educational programmes and helps us to better understand ecosystems.

The research reports provide an overview of all the research projects carried out or started from 2001 to 2006.
