The six National Park municipalities - Admont, Hieflau, Johnsbach, Landl, St Gallen and Weng im Gesäuse – together form the Gesäuse National Park Region. The municipalities of Johnsbach and Weng make up the majority of the park area, covering 50% and 30% respectively. Admont and the eastern municipalities of Hieflau, Landl and St Gallen account for the remaining 20% of the park area. The rich cultural history of the region, which is inseparably linked to the history of iron ore mining and processing, timber rafting and charcoal burning, and its unique natural landscape promise visitors a diverse, entertaining and memorable stay in the Gesäuse National Park region.
The Benedictine monastery in Admont is a particular cultural jewel which boasts the world’s largest monastic library, a private Austrian museum rich in contrasts, the neo-Gothic monastery church and, since May 2004, a newly designed natural history museum as well. And don’t forget the multimedia presentation which displays the work of the Benedictine monks.
You can download the latest issue of the region’s magazine containing all special offerings and a directory of accommodation and restaurants.
